Industry claims need proof. Look for relevant integrations, evidence, escalation patterns, and customer examples.
Manufacturing has become one of the most targeted sectors for cyberattacks, with ransomware groups recognizing that production downtime creates enormous pressure to pay. At the same time, the convergence of IT and operational technology (OT) networks has expanded the attack surface dramatically. SOC providers that serve manufacturers must bring a rare combination of traditional IT security expertise and deep knowledge of industrial control systems, production environments, and OT-specific threats.
Manufacturing environments present unique security challenges that general-purpose SOC providers often struggle to address. Production networks run industrial protocols (Modbus, DNP3, EtherNet/IP) that look nothing like standard IT traffic. Legacy PLCs and SCADA systems cannot run endpoint agents. Patching is constrained by production schedules and vendor certifications. Any security response must consider the physical safety implications of disrupting industrial processes. These realities demand a SOC provider with genuine OT experience.
The most critical capability for a manufacturing SOC provider is unified visibility across both IT and OT environments. Attackers increasingly use IT networks as an entry point and then move laterally into OT systems — as demonstrated by high-profile attacks on manufacturing companies. Effective detection requires correlating events across both domains, understanding which IT-side indicators may signal OT-side risk, and maintaining asset inventories that span the full converged environment.
When evaluating SOC providers for manufacturing, prioritize demonstrated OT security experience, support for industrial protocol monitoring, understanding of safety system architectures, and familiarity with frameworks like IEC 62443 and NIST Manufacturing Profile. Ask specifically about their OT analyst capabilities, how they handle passive monitoring in sensitive production environments, and their incident response approach when both IT and OT systems are affected.
